Making A Difference This World Soil Day

World Soil Day 2021 (#WorldSoilDay) and its campaign “Halt soil salinization, boost soil productivity” aims to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management, fighting soil salinization, increasing soil awareness and encouraging societies to improve soil health.

Soil salinization is the consequence of improper irrigation, human intervention or drought, and can harm the ecosystems found within soil.

This means a reduction in the biodiversity of soil, an inability for agricultural activities to take place, soil erosion, and poor water quality. The UN is striving to change this, by raising awareness of soil salinization, through their annual World Soil Day.

So how can you help?

The UN has assembled a list of great ideas for you to contribute, including:

  • Enter their photography, booklet or poster contests
  • Run a social media campaign
  • Watch salt-affected soils’ videos
  • Launch a social media campaign
  • Organize a treasure hunt in nature
  • Give a lecture at school with a quiz
  • Organize a kids’ experiment
  • Collect soil samples
  • Dig a soil profile
  • Go on an excursion/field work

One simple way you can make a difference to healthy soil at home is by disposing of your expired or unwanted medicines via the RUM program. This keeps harmful medicines out of our soils and away from their precious ecosystems.
